Arrrg! Internets is dead PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 September 2009 01:16

Well my ISP (BE*) decided to do some update, the inconsiderate bastards tend to do these when I'm up and on my computer, normally in the early AM. Although I have to give them credit, they are the first ISP that I've ever had that actually email me well in advanced to tell me about downtime and updates to my service; they normally send me an SMS too!

Well at 2:33AM my internets went off, blinking lights of death on the modem :(

However luckily for me I have an unlimited o2 datapackage on my phone, and my phone is able to act as a NAT gateway. So in goes the phone via USB and configure it to become an internet sharing gateway, BAM! internets are back.

Although a little slow, is more than usible for a back up connection.

Now come the obligatory Speedtest.Net results

Normal connection. (might be off a little because I didn't stop all network traffic)

o2 connection.

Although these don't give the best results, because the London servers get heavily loaded however it was the recommended server for my o2 connection so to be fair I test them both with the London server.

My best Be* result is normally from Maidenhead

Just to add insult to injury, I've tested the EGS Windows server which is located in Maidenhead

Although I've got to admit that it's piss funny that we have better connectivity to London than we do to Maidenhead which is were the server is located.

Anyway enough messing about, the point was that even though my ISP was offline for upgrades etc, that still didn't stop me from getting on the internets. It has also made me consider getting a 3g style modem for a backup connection.

p.s. I ment to post this last night but didn't, oh well...

Only a quick update. PDF Print E-mail
Friday, 18 September 2009 00:23

Nothing really to report although I'll give a quick update.

  1. A few site updates on Extreme Game Servers.
    • We've added a new dedicated server range
    • A new game has been added "Killing Floor"
    • Some subtle code errors have been corrected
    • Missing files which were linked to pages have been unreferenced
  2. Clearing the house up and selling things I really don't need any more on ebay.
  3. Huge amount of back pain, this week I've been getting neck and back pain with my entire right arm tingling. Yes it has been very uncomfortable.
  4. Ripping my audio CDs to MP3's so I can listen to them on my MP3 player. Although I've become very disappointed with the range of audio books in my local library, hopefully when I go down to Telford this weekend I might be able to get some better titles.

That's the main updates, although I have done a few things on qsplace. I've updated the back end text editor or wysiwyg editor as some people call it. I now has alot more features as well as a spell checker which for once seems to work, although I don't know how well considering I can't spell.

I've started to create a new photo gallery hosted on Extreme Game Servers rather than Fast Hosting Direct mainly because my current hosts don't allow me enough CPU time. In short I can't create the thumbnails or resize the images server side, when I try it allows me to do a few but then kills my PHP session off. So considering I actually own a server in a datacentre I thought I might as well use that for the image side of this site, until my contract with Fast Hosting Direct runs out next year; at which time the entire site will be moved. Why wasn't it on Extreme Game Servers from day one? well for a start it didn't quite exist!

Although I have got to do a couple of things either tonight or tomorrow.

  1. Flash a new firmware on my phone
I have a XDA Serra (HTC Raphael) and currently use Elite Rom RC4 however there are some huge bugs in it
    • Can't use the keyboard fully, symbols etc don't work
    • Can't use voice dialing, it just isn't there
    • Sometimes crashes on boot
    • Bluetooth is a little flaky
    • GPS take years to start and lock on
    • The time always sets it self to 1 hours slow. (trust me it's a right pisser, I'm normally late anyway this just makes it an extra hour late.)
  2. Reinstall Wind..........*shudder*.
It's a pile of shite, simple. However everything I need to run need windows, and whilst I can get most things working on Linux I just don't have the time to fuck about and complicate things. It's basically gotten to the point that explorer is continually crashing, so it needs to be reinstalled, however I always put it off just due to the HUGE amount of data I need to back up, not vital data just personal things like bookmarks etc.

Well that's about it for now.

Start of updates - Checking Disks PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 26 August 2009 03:41

Well it's been a little while and finally all can be revealed as to why I don't have a lot of time, however not in this post; his post is about a small annoyance that I have.

CDs.........DVDs........Floppies........Zip Disks.........and the pissing rest of them!

Tonight because yet again I can't sleep I decided to do some room maintenance, in particular the 11 foot stack of removable media that I've acrewed over the last 6 years of living in Derby.

I'm an absolute bugger for just writing another disk because I can't find the one I wrote last week, windows install disks are a typical example. Why write so many of the same disk? because it's cheaper to do that than to waste my time finding the old one. Well it's finally come back to bite me on the arse, because not only do I write a new disk, but I also don't label the fucking things. Joy!

So tonight I've been putting each and every disk that is in my computer room into a drive to see what is on it, only to find that there is also blank disks mixed into the pile. So at least I've gained some more disks to rewrite crap that I already have on disk so that in 5-6 years time I can do this all over again eh?

Over all, out of the 300+ disks that I checked I found about 20 with anything that I actually want to keep.

I found:

Laura's "King John" play that she did in Uni/College (I'll get her to she'll correct me.
Laura's Parents Africa photos from 2007
My school and college music, which I'm going to upload for a laugh.
My Egypt Holiday photos from 2007.
Various Projects that have been long forgotten.
Frontier Elite and Elite Plus (on CD and Floppy respectively)

All in all a good 3 hours find! Although it would have been less if my system didn't suffer from the vista disk drive disappearance bug. This is basically when the DVD/CD drive decides not to read and then fucks off on holiday leaving you without a drive, until that is you use drive management to remap it as a different letter.

Well that's about it for what I've done tonight, more posts to come I promise!

Little sisters hen night PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 12 July 2009 12:24

Well it's the first time I got taken out on a hen night!

Actually thats not technically true, it's the first time I've been dragged out as a photographer for a hen night. Normally I wouldn't have even entertained the idea because at the end of the day it's a womens night out, however it was my little sisters hen night and she wanted some good photo's. Whilst I don't have an amazing camera, nor is it a DSLR, unlike some people who have good cameras I actually know how to use mine (thats use it in other modes than auto) and how to get really good shots out of it.

The photos have been uploaded to the photo gallery, however there listed as family photo's untill I get permission to open them up to the "Friends" group. Meaning that only direct family members will be able to see them untill I'm told I can do otherwise.

Photos Are Here

For those who actually want to know the specs of my camera it's a Fuji s604 with a generic external flash and ir slave trigger, told you it wasn't anything special but it was a gift from my fiancee 2 years ago and it has a CF slot. As with everything when I get money that isn't being used on important things like eating and keeping a roof over my head I might consider getting something like a Nikon D50, Canon EOS 400, etc; however it's way way way way way down on the list
